New Mercedes-Benz SLK to offer Web link

Wed, 03 Nov 2010

The new Mercedes-Benz SLK, due out next spring, will be the automaker's first vehicle with on-board Internet access via its Command infotainment platform, AutoWeek sister publication Automobilwoche has learned from company sources.

The updated Mercedes C class also is expected to offer Web-browsing capability when it arrives shortly after the SLK debuts.

"We will then offer our own online services as well," a top executive told Automobilwoche.

Unlike BMW, Mercedes connects its customers' smart phones with the infotainment system. Mercedes's Munich-based rival installs its own SIM card in its vehicles.

Mercedes uses the new Terminal Mode as standard for its connection. This allows for the smart phone display to be transferred into the infotainment system.

The phone's applications can be controlled with keys on the steering wheel, via a touchscreen or by using the phone handset.
