The New Saab 9-5 UK

The start of 2010 saw a flurry of stories on Saab as the battle lines were drawn to see who would grab control of GM’s troublesome Swede. Eventually – after many false dawns – that fell to Dutch maker of quirky supercars Spyker who – much to the amazement of all – seem to have a very cohesive forward plan for Saab.

Forward plans are all very well, but what matters in the short term is making the most of what you already have. Fortunately for Spyker, Saab were ready with their version of the GM Insignia – the Saab 9-5 - and a very promising car it seems to be. So it’s now about making the 9-5 work for Saab as its success is the key to moving forward positively.

So we thought it a bit odd that we’ve not really had anything new to write about the 9-5 since we got UK prices and model info for the 9-5 back in March, almost 3 months ago. So we sent Saab an email asking if there was anything new to say, even if that was only to pin down a time when the UK will see its first customer cars, instead of the ‘This Summer’ line, which is all we’ve had thus far.

Weirdly, we didn’t get a reply. What we did get was a humongous press release a couple of hours later which seems to tell you everything you could probably need to know about the 9-5. So as we know a lot of you are keen on this ‘New Era’ Saab we’ve put it up for you to read.

We’re not sure there’s much new, even though it’s all in one place, which is nice. We had asked Saab stuff like when the first 9-5s will hit customers, if they could give us an indication of sales levels or what the best selling models are. But as we said, they didn’t say.

Maybe they don’t know. Or maybe they just don’t want to tell us.
