The new Toyota Aygo (pictured) on sale 1 July 2014

The new Toyota Aygo – Toyota’s take on the Citroen C1 / Peugeot 108 – arrived at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and probably looks the most credible of the three. And now it’s on sale. Starting price for the new Aygo is a reasonable £8,595 for the Aygo X 3-door with a 5-speed manual ‘box, rising to £12,345 for the Aygo x-clusiv 3-door with x-shift auto ‘box.

The only engine option is the 1.0 litre 3-cylinder petrol with 68bhp, but there is a choice between the 5-speed manual and the optional automated manual x-shift ‘box.

As you’ve probably worked out, Toyota has gone a bit ‘X’ mad on the Aygo, with a big ‘X’ at the front and ‘X’ tagged to just about every aspect of the car, including trim levels –  X, X-Play, X-Pression, X-Cite and X-Clusiv.

The Aygo X gets 14″ wheels, projector headlights with LED, LED running lights and electric front windows, with the X-Play adding 15″ wheels, piano black X on the front, body-colour handles and mirrors, leather steering wheel and gear knob, Bluetooth, AirCon, Rev Counter, 50:50 split back seats and controls on the steering wheel.

The range-topping Aygo X-Pression comes with 15″ alloys, Piano Black trim on the back bumper and A-Pillars, Front Fogs, part leather sports seats, X-Touch MultiMedia, DAB, rear-view camera and extra interior embellishments.

There are alos a couple of special edition Aygos on offer which add a twist to the X-Pression trim: The Aygo X-Cite comes with an Orange Twist paint job, 15″ gloss black alloys with orange centre and Piano Black detailing and the Aygo X-Clusiv comes with a Black paint job, 15″ machined finish alloys and chrome detailing.

Options abound too, with X-Cite and X-Clusiv models having an X-Tra Premium Pack with leather, Smart Entry and Start and the X-Pay and X-Pression getting an optional INstyle pack with leather seats with coloured accents.

There are more ‘Packs’ on offer including OUTshine (extra chrome) and OUTshield (parking sensors, boot liner and mats) plus customisation packs like the OUTstand, OUTburst, INspire and INtense – which add styling changes – and even coloured decals and special alloys are on offer.

The new Toyota Aygo goes on sale on July 1st in a total of 14 different versions – before you start playing with all the options, packs and customisation stuff – with an extra £600 off list price if you order early.

It seems unlikely any two Aygos will come out of a Toyota showroom looking the same.
