New Volvo V40 starts at £19,745

The new Volvo V40 – revealed at Geneva in March – will cost from £19,745 when it arrives in the UK.

Despite being an almost run-of-the-mill car launch, the new Volvo V40 struck a real chord at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Almost everyone found the new V40 an appealing offering with great styling that’s right on the Zeitgeist. And it needs to be.

Volvo has big ambitions for the new V40 with sales of pushing on 100,000 cars a year expected – and it has tough competition with the BMW 1 Series and new Mercedes A Class firmly in its sights. So far the V40 has ticked one of the three big boxes – it looks great.

Now it’s time for the second big tick with the announcement that the new V40 will start the right side of £20k with the Volvo V40 D2 (115hp) Start/Stop ES coming in at £19,745. That manages to come in under the BMW 116d ES by a few hundred pounds and the spec looks a bit better.

That ES spec includes City Safety, pedestrian airbag, Bluetooth, high performance audio with 5″ colour display screen, Climate, 16″ Alloys, DSTC , electric windows and a leather steering wheel. Opt for the ES Nav spec and you also get SatNav with Voice, 7″ colour display and free map updates.

The SE spec adds Textile/T-Tec upholstery, graphite inlays, Cruise, steering wheel remote controls and keyless start, power door mirrors with puddle lamps and chrome exterior trim on the outside. Top of the tree SE Lux throws in leather, 17″ alloys, LED running lights and active xenon lights with cornering and cleaning.

There’s plenty of options to spend extra kitting out your new V40 from Geartronic at £1,485 (D3 and D4 only) and leather (1,250) to DAB (£325), TV (£750) and heated seats (£285) as well as endless safety stuff like BLIS, LDW and PCC.

The disappointment is that Volvo don’t seem to be offering the 250bhp T5 we were expecting, which is a real shame; a halo V40 with a sub 7 second 0-62mph sounded promising. Maybe later.

The price and spec of the new V40 looks good and prices are competitive, certainly against the BMW 1 Series (we don’t know what Mercedes want for the new A Class yet). If Volvo can convince buyers the new V40 is the equal of the Germans – and we should include the Audi A3 in that – they could be on to a winner.

The new Volvo V40 goes on sale now with first customer cars expected in September.
