Nissan LEAF Nismo – more power, less weight.

Nissan LEAF Nismo on Nissan's stand in Tokyo

Nissan has revealed its second Nismo car in two days at the Tokyo Motor Show with a sporty LEAF EV – the Nissan LEAF Nismo.

The Nissan LEAF Nismo. We’d expect the LEAF to be the last car Nissan would add Nismo bits to. But they have.

Standing proud and butch on Nissan’s Tokyo Motor Show stand is a Nismo worked-over version of the LEAF, Nissan’s electric car for the masses.

Nissan are calling the LEAF Nismo a concept, but it seems pretty clear they intend putting it in to production. Having managed to sell around 20,000 LEAFs already, Nissan are doubtless looking for a way to appeal to potential EV buyers looking for something a bit more dynamic.

So the LEAF Nismo gets a sporty bodykit and some big, black 18″ alloys to make it look far more like a hot hatch and much less like a boring family car.

The Nismo also gets tweaks to the supension to give a more sporty ride with more dynamic handling and a chunk of weight reduction to make the batteries scoot the LEAF along that bit better.

And although officially Nissan aren’t trumpeting any power increase for the LEAF Nismo, we understand that power has been upped by around 10 per cent. What that will do to the range if you use it we wouldn’t like to think, but it should make the LEAF Nismo a lot more fun around town.

We understand the Juke Nismo as a concept, and we expected to see the GT-R and 370Z get the Nismo treatment. But we didn’t actually consider Nissan would kit out the LEAF with Nismo goodies.

Which makes us think that Nissan are now likely to roll out Nismo options right across their range.
