One Lap of the Web: Green machines, light-up stars and an upside down Porsche

We spend a lot of time on the Internet -- pretty much whenever we're not driving, writing about or working on cars. Since there's more out there than we'd ever be able to cover, here's our daily digest of car stuff on the Web you may not otherwise have heard about.

To participate in the 24 Hours of LeMons you not only need a sub-$500 car, but you also have to find a gimmick. Our own Rory Carroll uses his Russian Lada sedan decked out with images of the hammer and sickle. But check out Team Porcubimmer's car, aka the Homer. The vehicle is made up to look like the Homer Simpson-designed vehicle in one of the early episodes of the series. Pro trivia tip, Homer's car company exec brother was voiced by Danny DeVito.

“Top Gear” returns to the British airwaves this weekend and to BBC America one week later. The big news of the off season was about what car the trio will use for their reasonably priced car. We were hoping for a Chevy Cruze, or maybe a Ford Focus, but they went with a Vauxhall Astra. It's a good choice, and despite the fact that we don't get the car here, it does remind us of the go-go Saturn days.
