One Lap of the Web: Living with an electric motorcycle, Land Rover's Unimog and Reattas in Finland

Mon, 05 Aug 2013

We spend a lot of time on the Internet -- pretty much whenever we're not driving, writing about or working on cars. Since there's more out there than we'd ever be able to cover, here's our daily digest of car stuff on the Web you may not otherwise have heard about.

-- The route for the 2014 Hemmings Motor news Great Race, and this year, the race is heading east. It will start in Maine on June 21 and make its way down to Florida by June 29. If you're up to the challenge, start assembling your team now. Recall that this year, the race snaked down the Mississippi with close to 100 teams competing for $150,000 in total prizes. Find out more at Hemmings.

-- With just under 22,000 ever produced, Buick Reattas aren't exactly common in the United States -- so seeing one in Finland has to be quite the shock to the system. Hooniverse's Antti Kautonen's enthusiasm for the oft-neglected Reatta has us wondering: Is it time to give Buick's two-door another look?

-- Speaking of unusual vehicles, how about a Unimog with a British accent? We're talking about the Land Rover 101 Forward Control 4x4, which promises to be as impractical for day-to-day driving as the beastly German utility vehicle with just a few mechanical and electrical gremlins thrown in for added character. There's a 1975 example listed on eBay right now.

-- Wired's Damon Lavrinc is driving a Zero DS -- and nothing but a Zero DS -- for six months. Apparently living with an electric motorcycle as one's sole source of transportation isn't so bad -- so long as you live in California, plot your route carefully and take advantage of every electrical outlet you come across. We're not sure how much we trust Lavrinc's claims that the DS represents a “personal fitness regime” but who are we to judge?
