One Lap of the Web: Rally to Goodwood, Utah raises speed limits and Jeeps in Iceland

Thu, 19 Sep 2013

-- Today's vehicles are more than capable of safely exceeding the speed limit. This isn't any secret to us, but apparently lawmakers are just starting to clue in; Utah has joined a slowly increasing number of states in raising some speed limits to 80 mph. Their justification? It's actually safer to raise posted speeds in some areas, because it makes traffic speeds more uniform -- speeders are going to speed anyway, and the new limit lets law-abiders keep pace. Does this make perfect sense to you, or is the logic tortured? Get more info at Jalopnik before you issue your verdict.

-- We love classic racers of all shapes and sizes. This 1930 Hillegass sprint car is on the more diminutive end of the race car spectrum, but it's certainly not a toy -- its Ford flathead four is more than capable of propelling it to frightening speeds. It would look great as a sculpture in someone's living room, but it would be a shame to keep this well-maintained off a dirt track.

-- Part of the fun of old-car events is driving there, especially with a group of fellow enthusiasts. It's something that owners who trailer their cars from concours green to concours green never get to enjoy. The guys at Petrolicious don't seem to believe in trailers -- which is why they're featuring a multipart story of a group that drove their classics from Paris to Goodwood for the 2013 Goodwood Revival. Yes, there are plenty of great photos. Yes, there is a Facel involved.

-- We get more than a few capable off-roaders in our test fleet, but we rarely get the chance to take them off-road. The thought of all that underexploited trail-crushing potential rankles us to no end. Watching this video of American Expedition Vehicles-equipped Jeep Wranglers exploring the majestic wilds of Iceland doesn't make us feel any better about our tendency to stick to pavement, but it is a great way to enjoy a bit of vicarious adventuring:
