Pagani Huayra pretends to be a Koenigsegg to get in to the U.S.

The first road-legal Huayra in the States – or is it a Koenigsegg?!

Regular readers may remember we cast doubts on Pagani’s claim that the new Huayra would be US road legal back in 2011, when we revealed that Pagani’s plans to gain an exemption from fitting advanced airbags was denied. That meant Pagani had to go away and get the Huayra to conform with airbag regulations to make it legal to sell in the US, which Pagani promised to do and declared everything would be fine and they’d have the first road-legal Huayras Stateside by 2013.

On the face of it, the first road-legal Pagani Huayra arrived at Pebble Beach last month, proudly displaying all its US legal-ness including ugly little orange indicators at the front. But all may not be as it seems.

An eagle-eyed member at Teamspeed has realised that the data plate bolted to the Huayra – mandated by the NHTSA – includes an exemption from the Advanced Airbag Requirements. Which seems a bit odd as Pagani was refused exemption in 2011, which is what blocked its entry in to the States.

Even more peculiar is the statement on the data plate that the Huyra is exempt from FMVSS 108 (Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment), which can’t be true as Pagani has never applied for such an exemption.

To compound the mess further, Pagani quote the code EX 06-10 to substantiate the Huayra’s exemption, which is the code given to – and for the exclusive use of – Koenigsegg CCX.

So on the face of it, it seems Pagani have declared the Huayra road-legal in the US simply by fitting it with an exemption plate plagiarised from Koenigsegg.

Most odd.
