Peugeot 508 RXH - hybrid, 4WD and butch

We had spy photos of what looked like a rufty-tufty, Allroad-style Peugeot 508 Estate back in February, and here we are in July with all the bumph on the Peugeot 508 RXH landing in our inbox.

For the Peugeot 508 HRX is exactly what we spied back in February – a high riding 508 Estate with lots of toys; probably best thought of as the 508 Allroad.

It gets the same jacked-up suspension as an Audi Allroad and the same butch bits of bodywork to make it look all rufty-tufty; fit for the fight in both the urban and rural jungles.

But the fit for purpose – even if it is only an urban jungle purpose for most buyers – is more than just skin deep. This 508 SW does a very passable impression of 4WD SUV.

The 4WD is provided virtue of the HDi HYbrid4 drivetrain Peugeot are also using in the 3008 HYbrid4. That gives the 508 RXH a 2.0 litre diesel running the front wheels and an electric motor the back – with a combined power of 200bhp and 332lbs/ft of torque.

Which means you’re going to be able to do on-road stuff with alacrity and should manage a bit better than just getting through the boot sale car park off-road.

Official figures say the setup emits just 109g/km and averages 67.2mpg. You’ll get nothing close in the real world, of course, but for a well-equipped, spacious, good looking, decent-sized load lugger with 4WD, anything around 50mpg real world – which is what you’ll probably get – is terrific, especially as the performance will also be decently lively.

Talking of well-equipped, the 508 RXH comes with stuff like keyless, electric seats, panoramic roof, top-end SatNav and Infotainment and heads-up display and premium materials abounding.

The Peugeot 508 RXH will be officially revealed at Frankfurt in September and arrive in the UK in Spring 2012.

And is one hybrid that looks very interesting.
