Porsche 911 GT3s to be given new engines after fire issue

The Porsche 911 GT3 (pictured) is getting a new engine

Last month, after two new Porsche 911 GT3s caught fire, Porsche stopped delivering new 911 GT3s to owners, halted production and advised owners not to drive their new pride and joy. But now Porsche say they have discovered the cause of the issue and have a fix – a new engine.

The fault that caused the fires is as simple as faulty connecting rod fasteners which damaged the crankcase, so Porsche is in the process of building new engines for all 785 GT3s already made with new connecting rod fasteners.

That task is going to take a while, but as soon as Porsche has the engines built they will be sent out to dealers to fit – a process that will take a full day for dealers – to get GT3 owners back on the road.

As soon as that is done Porsche will start production of the 911 GT3 once more and deliveries will re-commence.

It’s a thorough – if expensive – solution to the problem, but it’s typically Porsche thorough. And at least GT3 owners won’t feel their cars have been compromised in any way by the problem.
