Porsche BlueSport back on – but we knew that

Thu, 28 Jan 2010

It looks like the baby Boxster - the Porsche BlueSport - is in the planning.

Last year it was a case of ‘Spot the BlueSport’ as rumours ran wild over which parts of the VW Group (what happened to re-naming it Auto Union – another of last year’s rumours?) would run with the ‘Baby Roadster’ platform VW had developed. Well it finally looks as if the rumours are starting to become substance. Sort of.

First up in 2010 we had the Audi R4 – the compact eTron from the Detroit Motor Show – which Audi confirmed is going to happen (and not just as an electric Audi). Now we see that VW boss Martin Winterkorn is being quoted as saying that Porsche is looking at a smaller roadster to add to the range. Which would have to be based on the BlueSport Platform as there’s no way Porsche are going to develop an all new platform.

So, big news, eh? Well, not quite. The good Herr Winkertorn has been here before. In August last year we reported him telling reporters that Porsche were looking at a ‘Baby Boxster’, a ‘Baby Cayenne’ and an increase in production at Porsche from 75,000 cars a year to 150,000.

We also know that when VW turned the tables and took control of Porsche – after previously being the subject of a takeover bid by Porsche – the new boss at Porsche, Michael Macht, said that now Porsche was a VW company it would have to share platforms with other VW products. So it’s no surprise at all that Winterkorn is still talking about a Porsche BlueSport and a smaller SUV – which would be based on the Audi Q5 platform (dubbed the Porsche Roxster).

So the news is that Porsche are going to make a baby Boxster. But we knew that anyway.
