Porsche Rennsport IV rolls on at Laguna Seca

Sat, 15 Oct 2011

Heavy fog for the morning qualifying runs didn't seem to dampen the spirits of competitors nor the thousands of fans attending Rennsport IV at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. Billed as the largest gathering of Porsche race cars and drivers, the day was filled with on-track action as well as a concours of historically significant Porsches from the past 40-plus years.

Three classes of race cars competed on Saturday. Cars vied for the Gmund Cup, the Eifel Trophy and the Rennsport Reunion Cup, which was made up of GT3 Cup cars. Those cars and drivers will get another chance on the track on Sunday.

The first two classes saw very early Porsche race cars battling for the top prize.

Rennsport IV--an every-three-year event for Porsche owners and enthusiasts--is for the first time on the West Coast of the United States. It concludes on Sunday with six more races. Previous Rennsport events were at Lime Rock Park and twice at Daytona.
