Porsche plans to shift U.S. headquarters to Atlanta airport site

Wed, 11 May 2011

Porsche is reportedly set to move its North American headquarters from a suburb north of Atlanta to the site of a demolished Ford Motor Co. assembly plant that once built the Ford Taurus and the Mercury Sable next to the Atlanta airport.

A formal announcement is expected on Thursday, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Porsche officials could not be reached on Wednesday morning to comment on the report.

Unnamed sources cited by the newspaper said Porsche plans to build a new headquarters building and a test track at the site in Hapeville, Ga. The track is said to be similar to one that Porsche has in Silverstone, England.

Porsche has about 200 employees at its Atlanta-area office in Sandy Springs, Ga., which is north of the city center. Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport is located south of the city center.

Ford opened the Atlanta assembly plant in 1947. The plant was closed in October 2006. The site was sold to Jacoby Development Inc. in 2008 and the plant was torn down.
