Porsche specialist Gemballa gets Tornado ready to blow

Sat, 27 Dec 2008

Gemballa has a reputation for producing extreme versions of Porsche models. From the 997 based Avalanche to the Carrera GT based Mirage, all the Gemballa models offer extremes of performance and design. And now there’s a new model to add to the list. The Tornado.

The Tornado is based on the Cayenne Turbo, and comes in two versions – the GTS and GTR – with three power options of 550bhp, 650bhp or 750bhp. Slow is not a word that will be used for the Tornado!

The Porsche Gemballa Tornado - an Extreme 4x4

Of the two models, the GTS is the ‘Comfort’ option, whilst the GTR is an out and out sportscar, with racing bucket seats, Macralon side and rear windows and a general ‘stripped-out’ feel (think Gallardo Superleggera or Ferrari Scuderia). If you want the luxury options you need to opt for the GTS.

With the GTR you get a heap of Carbon Fibre,  and if you opt for the 750bhp version you get sidepipes integrated in to the side skirts and a very tuneful wastegate. Big intercoolers (twice the size of the original) give great throttle response and better performance, and the aerodynamically redesigned front and rear gives a much more purposeful look and improved handling.

This is not an SUV to go mud plugging in. But if you want an extreme example of what is already the best road going SUV (and almost the best off-road) you need look no further than the Gemballa Tornado.

But be warned -  it’s not for those who seek a low profile!
