Prius leads California in cars sold

Fri, 01 Mar 2013

Well, if you needed any more evidence that car passion is dead, look no further than the Golden State. Legions of granola eaters made the Prius badge the top seller in the state formerly recognized as the cradle of cool-car culture. Between the Prius Liftback, Prius v, Prius Plug-in and the Prius c, Toyota sold 61,893 the soulless, hyper fuel-efficient machines. With that, we're naming the Prius the official car of California.

That got us thinking, what would be the official state car of Michigan? Florida? Nevada?

Michigan: Ford Mustang GT

Ford
The 2013 Ford Mustang GT is perfect for Michigan with its blue-collar attitude and relative efficiency.

The official car of Michigan would have to be one of the Big Three. We could have gone Corvette or Viper, but we think the Mustang GT represents the working class responsible for assembling all the Detroit metal in the first place. It's a relative steal at just more than $30,000, and its dollar-per-horse ratio is a low $70.58. Of course, you will need some winter tires for about half the year, but with the improvements in traction control software, this could easily be an all year vehicle.

New York: Fiat 500 Abarth

Fiat

The Fiat 500 is the perfect car for crowded cities and small parking spots. The problem is that it isn't very much fun. That's why we'd specify the scorpion logo and go with the Abarth upgrade. That puts 160 hp to the ground -- it feels like 200 -- along with 170 lb-ft of torque. It also gives off an insane exhaust note, rivaling the old turbocharged Mitsubishi Eclipse -- plenty to anger sidewalk eaters, taxi drivers and bike messengers.

Nevada: Lamborghini Aventador Roadster

Lamborghini
The Lamborghini Aventador Roadster will fit exactly one showgirl in the passenger seat.

The Aventador Roadster has to be the official car of Nevada. It's flashy, it's fast, and it'll take $455,000 out of your pocket faster than you can say “all-in.” With the roof off you can let the sandy wind blow through your hair, enjoy some of the famous casinos and pick up exactly one member of the opposite sex. We'd submit that's really all you need. If you get sick of cruising the Strip, there's always Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Also, have you ever seen the mountain roads in that state?

Florida: Buick LaCrosse

Buick

We couldn't possibly do a rundown of state's cars without poking a little fun at our friends -- and relatives -- in Florida. The LaCrosse has a great air-conditioning system and a silky suspension that won't upset a cup of coffee if you should happen to drive over an alligator. The one thing we would add is a red safety button on the dash: In case of emergency, push for brakes. We'll call it a fail-safe.

Does your state have an official -- or unofficial -- car? Let us know in the comments.
