Production Porsche 918 Spyder – first photo from Pebble Beach

The Porsche 918 Spyder arrives at Pebble Beach

The Porsche 918 Spyder has been on its way for quite some time, and we’ve seen it in umpteen guises from 918 Concept to 918 in disguise to 918 in Martini colours. And now we get the real deal – the production version of the 918 Spyder. But rather than a fanfare and a gazillion photos, Porsche has simply posted a single photo on Twitter to announce that the production 918 is at Montery Motor Week. And, as far as we can work out, this is the first time a production 918 has been seen in public.

So it looks like buyers who put down their deposit for the 918 m ore than two years ago can now look forward to almost 900bhp under their right foot and a 0-62mph of 2.8 seconds with lots of hybrid tricks – like EV only running – thrown in.

On the face of it, the 918 Spyder seems to offer less than LaFerrari or McLaren P1 in performance stakes, but the real world application of its power will be the key to its performance, with its 4WD provided by electric motors at the front.

What we’re really looking forward to, as the 918 Spyder, LaFerrari and McLaren P1 start hitting customers garages in the next few months, is finding out exactly which of these three big-hitting supercars is the pick.

Whichever it is, you can be sure it will make the almost invisible Pagani Huayra look like an over-priced statement of pretension and under performance.
