The Rolls Royce Bespoke Picnic Set

You can buy a Rolls Royce Phantom for as little as £275,000. Which may seem like a lot of money, but to the Phantom buyer who probably already owns not only a number of other cars but in all likelihood a yacht and a plane as well, it’s a mere bagatelle.

What’s more, the Rolls Royce buyer well used to buying and commissioning private yachts and planes is also used to specifying custom options. Not just custom options from a list, but true, bespoke custom options. Which is something Rolls Royce are very happy to accommodate.

Over the last five years the number of customers specifying Bespoke options has risen significantly, with the number of Phantoms leaving Goodwood with some element of Bespoke fittings rising from 50% to 75%.

Rolls Royce Bespoke can be applied to quite simple items – such as tread plates or contrast stitching – up to more significant stuff like personalised veneers and unique paints.  Then there are special bespoke elements like the stunning picnic set designed in-house at Goodwood.

The picnic set started life with research in early 2009. Six months and 1500 hours later the Rolls Royce Bespoke Picnic Set was born and saw the light of day at Villa D’Este. Constructed from oiled teak it blends the attributes of traditional wicker hampers but with real solidity and a saddle tan leather front.

Open the folding picnic set and you get Indian rosewood tables and Goodwood-designed hand-blown and cut stemware, cutlery by David Mellor and well thought out touches like magnets inside the chopping boards holding the knives in place.

Rolls Royce hasn’t told us what the Picnic Set costs, but it’s a fair bet you could buy a whole car from many manufacturers for the same money. But that’s not the point. The point is that the rich can make their Rolls Royce entirely their own, and that is something very few car makers offer.

If you feel the urge to have a closer look at not just the unique picnic set but a range of Rolls Royce Bespoke stuff, you can this week if you’re off to Salon Privé.

We are.
