Rolls Royce Wraith Drophead Coupe confirmed for production.

Sun, 03 Nov 2013

The Rolls Royce Wraith (pictured) will get a Drophead sibling in 2016

It was always likely that Rolls Royce would take their ‘affordable’ model – the RR Ghost – and make a coupe version. What wasn’t really on the cards is that they would give it a more dramatic style – and a more driver-focused experience – and tag a name from the past on it to create a new Rolls Royce Wraith for the 21st century.

But that’s exactly what they’ve done, and the Wraith does seem to be an effective tool for Rolls Royce to extend the appeal of their cars to a new, perhaps younger, demographic.

But having created a Ghost Coupe in the Wraith, it was also a given that at some point the roof would be chopped off to create a Wraith Drophead Coupe.

In fact, just a month after the Wraith launched at Geneva we heard a whisper that a Wraith Drophead Coupe is already in the planning and expected to arrive in 2016, at a price somewhat north of the Wraith Coupe. And now that’s been confirmed.

Rolls Royce boss, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, in conversation with Autocar, confirmed that the Wraith Drophead is likely to arrive in late 2015 to cash in on the success RR are already seeing with the Wraith, with a new generation of Rolls Royce buyers attracted to the brand for the first time by the Wraith’s more dynamic, driver-focused demeanour.

Which can only be good news for the team at Goodwood.
