Singapore Grand Prix Qualifying: Hamilton on pole for Mercedes – Rosberg second

Sat, 20 Sep 2014

Lewis Hamilton takes pole for Mercedes in the 2014 Singapore Grand Prix

How much is seven one thousandths of a second in distance on a qualifying lap for the Singapore Grand Prix? About 45cm, and that’s all it took for lewis Hamilton to take pole position for tomorrow’s race from team mate Nico Rosberg in the dying seconds of final qualifying. Mercedes may have closed out the front row for tomorrow’s race, but they didn’t do it in the dominant way that has been the picture for the current season so far.

Behind the Mercedes front row there’s a Red Bull second row with Daniel Ricciardo just 0.173cecs behind pole and Sebastian Vettel just 0.048 behind him.

Behind Vettel, in fifth place, Alonso put his Ferrari just ahead of Massa’s Williams in sixth, Raikkonen took the second Ferrari in to seventh, Bottas managed eighth in his Williams, Magnussen put the McLaren in ninth and Kvyat managed tenth for Toro Rosso.

But what was most surprising is just how close qualifying was, with the gap between pole position Hamilton and ninth place Magnussen just 0.569secs.

Which augers well for a cracking race tomorrow.
