Skoda VisionC concept for Geneva 2014 debut

Fri, 07 Feb 2014

This is the first official teaser image of Skoda’s 2014 Geneva Motor Show star, called the Skoda VisionC concept.

The new design study will be unveiled in Switzerland next month and previews “the next stage of development in Skoda’s design language”, according to the Czech brand.

The car is quite a break from the norm for Skoda, which is a carmaker known for building practical family hatchbacks, saloons and estates under the VW Group umbrella.

That’s not to say its current range of cars is unattractive – far from it. Rather, they’re handsome in an inoffensive way. Not so the VisionC, it seems.

The initial rendering shows a rakish, aggressive-looking five-door coupe with sporting proportions. According to the firm, the 2014 VisionC concept will take the lead role in the brand’s next evolutionary steps:

“Skoda’s design is becoming more expressive, dynamic and emotional. At the same time, the five-door coupe study shows the possibility of innovative body concepts.”

The Skoda VisionC concept’s physical size is as yet unclear, so a possible production version of this prototype could rival Mercedes’ smaller CLA four-door coupe, or the German firm’s larger, more luxurious CLS model.

The car will likely be based on the VW Group’s flexible MQB chassis platform, which could help make a future production model more viable and affordable for customers.

All will be revealed following the car’s launch at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show next month, but we’re secretly hoping it could rival the smaller Merc.

Using the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine borrowed from parent company VW in either 230hp Golf GTI Performance tune, or 300hp specification from the range-topping Golf R, we’re rather excited about the thought of a performance-focused hot Skoda five-door coupe.

If the firm’s VisionD concept is anything to go buy – a motor show limelight winner that eventually morphed into the Skoda Rapid hatchback – the signs are positive.
