Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept hybrid (2011) news

Mon, 07 Nov 2011

Subaru won't just show the new BRZ sports car at the 2011 Tokyo motor show – it'll also unveil this Advanced Tourer Concept hybrid car.

Pitched as a hint at what could replace the Subaru Legacy, Subaru says the new Advanced Tourer Concept juggles 'driving performance and utility.'

This concept car is a bit smaller than today's Legacy, however; at 4580mm long, it's more C-segment sized than the current 4775mm Legacy wagon.

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept: the lowdown

A few technical highlights to absorb here: Subaru's horizontally opposed boxer engine is downsized and now sports direct fuel injection. Mixed with high-pressure turbocharging, Subaru says it will allow today's 2.5 and 2.0-litre engines to shrink to just 1600cc.

The Advanced Tourer's 1.6 turbo drives through a Lineartronic CVT transmission, sending torque to all four wheels, as you'd expect on a Subaru.

Downsized 1.6 turbo, 4wd… anything else of technical merit?

Yes. The Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept is also a hybrid. It uses a single electric motor to provide a silent EV mode at low speeds, driving all four wheels. It's a full hybrid system, and will recharge the lithium-ion batteries under deceleration.

What about the design of the Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept?

There's a full-length glass sunroof, while Scooby is experimenting with a digital monitor built into the steering wheel to display maps, TV and internet services.

We'll hear the full story on this car when it's unveiled on 30 November 2011.
