Subaru BRZ Video

With the Subaru BRZ officially debuting at this week’s Toyota Motor Show, Subaru has released a video of the BRZ on the move.

It’s hard not to feel a bit let down by the Subaru BRZ.

Perhaps the quote attributed to Subaru that the BRZ would get ‘less than 300bhp’ was lost in translation, but the fact the BRZ comes with just three horses more than its cousin the Toyota FT-86 just leaves a feeling of disappointment.

Of course, as a commentator on Cars UK pointed out, it always seemed a bit unlikely that the BRZ would wipe the floor in the power stakes with the FT-86 at launch, especially as Subaru is the junior partnership in this ToyBaru effort. But it was an enticing prospect; a light and nimble rear wheel drive sports car with 300bhp.

But instead we get a light and nimble sports car with 200bhp. Which is still appealing. Its low centre of gravity – thanks to an engine low down and well back – and a rear wheel drive platform does offer plenty of promise.

We still are unsure just how much the BRZ and FT-86 are going to cost when they arrive in the UK, but we reckon in the region of £28 is about right. That means competition from stuff like the new Mugen CR-Z (at £24k) and the soon to arrive Hyundai Veloster Turbo. Both of which will probably be quicker than either the BRZ or FT-86.

Despite that, the BRZ is appealing. If nothing else it shows that Toyota nd Subaru are serious about making good looking, sport cars that are in reach of ordinary mortals. And it looks good too, as you can see in the video Subaru has released.

We’re not too sure about the soundtrack on the BRZ video – and there’s a bit too much slow-mo for our liking – but it does showcase an appealing-looking car that promises plenty of fun.
