The Cosworth Impreza - just 75 being built

Yes, the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 did get revealed here back in March, but although we got all the goodies on what was on offer we didn’t get any pictures beyond a small teaser. But now we do.

But actually, the styling changes are hardly extreme. There’s a re-designed front bumper with a mesh grill and integrated spoiler, a set of bespoke 18″ alloys, a new spoiler out back and…that’s it. Inside you get Recaros and a glossy black dash. Oh, and a set of ‘Cosworth’ badges – inside and out.

So by the standards of boy-racerdom the mods are very subtle. Thankfully, the goodies are under the hood and, as we reported in March, they are significant.

The Cosworth Scooby gets the normal Impreza STI 2.5 litre boxer lump, but Cosworth then throw some high-performance pistons in, new con rods and bearings and a fresh head gasket. A laptop on the ECU, a mod or two to the turbo and wastegate, a new exhaust and ‘Hey Presto!’, you have the Subaru Cosworth Impreza STI CS400.

Thankfully, Subaru have also had a play with the suspension and brakes to cope with the Cosworth tweaks, with new springs, lower ride height and a set of AP brakes. Which will probably be needed, because the Coswrth Scooby is one fast machine.

The Cosworth Impreza’s 2.5 litre flat-four now delivers 395bhp and does  0-6-mph in 3.5 seconds (0-62 3.7 seconds). Figures which, according to Subaru, are “…Supercar humbling pace”. We won’t argue.

Just 75 Cosworth Impreza STI CS400s are being built. If you haven’t already enquired you’re probably too late. They start rolling out next month and will cost just less than £50k.

But where else can you get a four door, four seater car with that much performance for that sort of money?
