Tesla Model X to debut 9th February

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that the Tesla Model X Suv Crossover will debut in California on 9th February.

With the Tesla Roadster at the end of its life, and then Model S Saloon about to hit the road (probably), Tesla are moving on to the next instalment of their electric car pilgrimage - the Tesla Model X.

We had expected the Model X – which is based on the same underpinnings as the Model S Saloon – to debut by the end of 2011. Which is what Elon Musk told us last year. But that reveal has slipped a bit and is now scheduled for 9th February 2012 at Tesla HQ.

We’re expecting the Model X SUV come Crossover to offer pretty much the same powertrain options as the Model S on which its based, which will mean a variety of different range options for the same powertrain, from 160 miles to 300 miles.

It would also make sense for there to be a Model X with the wick turned up – just like the Model S Performance – which should deliver an electric SUV with a sub 5.0 second 0-60mph.

Prices for the Model X are expected to be similar to those for the Models S – with probably a small premium – which would mean the Model X starting at a shade over $50k after the taxpayer bribe in the States.

When Elon Musk told us the Model X would arrive ny the end of 2011, he did say it would be as a Prototype rather than a production model, with a launch planned for early 2014. That still seems the mostly likely schedule for the Tesla Model X SUV.

Hopefully, we’ll get more concrete news on the Model X on 9th February.
