Top Gear in Icelandic Volcano

Top Gear tackle a live Volcano in a Toyota in Iceland

Top Gear is off air at the moment – if you don’t count the endless repeats on BBC2, BBC3 and Dave – and that usually means that the boys are off somewhere exotic. And so they are – this time to an active volcano in Iceland.

It looks as if the boys have take the same Toyota they used in the trip to the North Pole – with May and Clarkson in the Toyota and Hamster on a sled – and done a modification or three to suit the heat instead of the cold.

Top of the list for climbing an active volcano is heat proof tyres and protection from burning ash falling from the skies. So the Toyota got water-cooled tyres so it could traverse the lava and an awning on top to protect the car from the falling ash.

The boys had a bit of an attempt with a Volcano in the Top Gear Bolivia special last season, but perhaps with a little more preparation they fared a bit better this time. We picked the story up from an Icelandic site – mbl.is - and thank them for the picture up top. But our Icelandic doesn’t exist – not even yes please, no thanks or pass the herring –  and Google’s translation leaves a lot to be desired. So we’ve probably missed a chunk of detail.

Still, it’s nice to see the boys spending as much of the BBC’s budget as possible playing silly buggers with a volcano.
