Toyota GT 86 Convertible confirmed

Toyota GT 86 Convertible on the way

With the Toyota GT 86 not yet out in the wild, we learn that Toyota are planning a GT 86 Convertible.

In what is perhaps one of the least surprising revelations recently, Toyota’s chief engineer has conformed that they are working on a convertible version of the GT 86. Well, they want to take a piece of the MX-5′s market with their new ‘affordable’ sports car so they have little choice.

Tetsuya Tada told Auto Bild that the GT 86 (and therefore the Subaru BRZ and Scion F-RS) was designed to be a convertible from the off and that Toyota were working on a production version. Which does sound promising, as if the GT 86 was conceived as a convertible it should manage to be stiff without real weight penalties.

But the convertible version of the GT 86 isn’t the only way Toyota will expand the GT 86 franchise. Word has it that there’s a supercharged GT 86 in the works - put together by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) – and we’ve believed all along that Subaru will drop a turbo version of the BRZ at some point.

Whether any of these options will extend to the North American Scion FR-S we don’t know, but it’s certain the GT 86 / BRZ franchise will grow, in choice and price.
