Toyota GT86 Drift Sprint with Keiichi Tsuchiya

Mon, 23 Jul 2012

The Toyota GT86 gets another dose of ‘Cheap Fun’ PR with the Drift Sprint competition featuring Keiichi Tsuchiya.

Keiichi Tsuchiya is the ‘Drift King’ with his Toyota AE86 sliding and squirming in balletic slides as he makes it dance in a way cars just don’t.

So it makes sense to get Keiichi Tsuchiya in to the driving seat of the new Toyota GT86 to show that an affordable sports car from Toyota can be a whole bunch of fun in ways that more powerful cars just aren’t.

There’s no disputing the fact that perfectly balanced but lower powered cars can offer more fun than silly horsepower numbers, and the Toyota GT86 seems to offer as much driving fun per pound spent as just about anything on the road at the moment.

To ram that point home, Toyota has organised the Drift Sprint Event where members of the public can strut their drifting skills behind the wheel of the GT86 (if you want to play check out Toyota’s blog) to see if they can match the deftness of Keiichi Tsuchiya.

To garner a bit of interest for their GT86 drifting games, Toyota has enlisted Keiichi Tsuchiya, Ollie Marriage (from Top Gear Magazine) and Steve Sutcliffe (Autocar) to demonstrate how to drift the GT86 round barrels in the best possible time.

Who got the best time? Not who you might expect.
