Toyota to roll out rear-seat airbag

Toyota Motor Corp. has developed a rear-seat airbag that deploys between passengers and will install it on a model to be launched in Japan.

The airbag inflates from a fixed, rear-seat center console during side collisions. The idea is to stop rear-seat passengers from knocking against each other or the console.

Toyota said the features will appear soon on a Japan-market vehicle. The company did not name the vehicle, but the redesigned Crown Majesta luxury sedan is scheduled to debut March 27.
