VW Beetle Sewage Power

I know, it’s the silly season for news. There’s not a lot going on – anyone with a brain has disappeared off for August – but we still have a site to run. So the odd, daft story is a help. Particularly when you can use VW’s penchant for stupid names for their cars.

The news is that Wessex Water has found a use for all the excess methane gas their sewage works in Bristol produces. Yes, they’re using it to power a Volkswagen Convertible. The bio-powered Beetle Bug was built by The Greenfuel Company and Wessex Water say that now they have installed specialist equipment to clean up the bio gas it runs their Beetle beautifully.

And it’s not just the Beetle Wessex run from the methane. They also produce electricity on site and sell it back to the national grid. How much they’ve spent on the Beetle and the specialist equipment they don’t say, but our guess is that if they added things up they’d be in the negative both financially and with their carbon footprint. Which sort of defeats the object.

And it apparently takes the daily deposits from seventy household toilets to produce enough meathane to run the Beetle for 10,00 miles. So it doesn’t look terribly viable as a home project. Thankfully. Just a ploy for a bit of cheap publicity by Wessex Water.

We should really be throwing in stuff like ‘We always knew the Beetle was a pile of Sh*t’ and ‘Even on CNG the Beetle doesn’t exactly go like Sh*t off a shovel’.

But I think we’ve lost the will to live.
