The VW Tiguan Match - replaces the Tiguan SE

Volkswagen’s compact crossover/suv/cuv – the VW Tiguan – has been with us a while now, so as is the way with all product – from soap to supercars – it’s time to tweak the offerings and repackage so the buyer thinks they’re getting more/better/something new for their hard earned cash. It’s called Marketing.

So we now get the Volkswagen Tiguan Match replacing the previous Tiguan SE trim. This is the first time VW have used one of their irritating ‘Pun Monikers’ on the Tiguan (you know – Match, Driver etc. – made some sense on the Golf) and is no doubt designed to keep sales momentum moving.

The premium on price over the outgoing SE model is £250 (you knew it would be up) but in fairness the Match does get Park Assist, Bluetooth and iPod, Climate, touchscreen DAB  and a multifunction steering wheel, so you’ll get your money’s worth.

The Tiguan Match gets a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines. There’s a 1.4 litre 148bhp and a 2.0 litre 167bhp petrol and a pair of 2.0 litre diesels with either 138bhp or 167bhp. Prices start at £22,100 for the 1.4 TSI BlueMotion Technology with 2WD.

We like the VW Tiguan – it’s well built and decent to drive – but it’s a bit bland looking. But we do like the looks of the Tiguan R-Line and we’d rather have seen a bit less kit and a bit more R-Line butchness from the Match.

Still, if you want butchness you’ll have to spend more and get the R-Line. Back to marketing.
