Vauxhall Insignia VXR SuperSport – under £30k

Wed, 07 Nov 2012

Vauxhall is replacing the Insignia VXR with the Insignia VXR SuperSport, with a 170mph top speed and costing just £29,995.

But don’t run away with the ieda that the VXR SuperSport ios some sort of new, super-powerful version of the old VXR without the SuperSport badge, because it’s not.

Vauxhall has simply taken the limiter off the old VXR – and in the process upped the top speed to 170mph – and actually dropped the price to £29,995. That simple expedient allows Vauxhall to trumpet the Insignia VXR SuperSport as ‘The fastest car on sale in the UK for under £30k’.

But nothing – or almost nothing – has changed over the old VXR apart from the limiter and price. OK, Vauxhall has stuck blue lettering on the Brembos and added a few extra numbers on the speedo. But that really is it.

Under the skin is the same HiPerStrut front suspension with 4WD and a 2.8 litre V6 Turbo ECOTEC engine producing 320bhp, enough to get the VXR SuperSport to 62mph in 5.6 seconds. Not exactly BMW M5 bashing territory, but swift.

And even though the Insignia VXR SuperSport is Vauxhall’s fastest car, it’s still not the fastest car they’ve ever built. The 1980s Lotus Carlton could actually manage 176mph.

The Vauxhall Insignia VXR SuperSport is now on sale for £29,995.
