Video shows voice-to-text is as dangerous as actual texting

As we cruise through Texas A&M Transportation Institute Tuesday revealed that voice-to-text apps -- which read text messages aloud and allow users to respond using their voice -- are equally as distracting as manual texting.

In the test, TTI had 43 drivers complete various tasks within a closed driving course. The drivers were asked to finish one lap completely free of cell phone use. Then they were told to take a lap while texting and then two laps using voice-to-text apps (Siri for the iPhone and Vlingo for Android) to stay in touch.

Each driver was required to perform various tasks while driving the course and response times were recorded. Even though the drivers reported feeling safer using the voice-to-text apps, researcher's data showed the apps to be just as distracting as manual texting, each method actually doubling driver response times.

More proof that while multitasking may be a way of life for a lot of folks, it's not appropriate while behind the wheel.

The video below illustrates just how risky either texting method can be.
