Vintage-photograph auction at Lime Rock to benefit teen-driver training

Mon, 31 Aug 2009

Photographs of racing legends from yesteryear will help the young drivers of tomorrow through an auction over Labor Day weekend at Lime Rock.

Autographed vintage photos of famous drivers will be sold to benefit a charity called Survive the Drive, which educates and trains high-school drivers in the Northeast. The program helped more than 10,000 students in the 2008-09 school year.

The auction will be held in tandem with the vintage races at Lime Rock Labor Day weekend. Fans will be able to meet Sam Posey at the Survive the Drive booth, and he will autograph a picture of himself with his famous Dodge Challenger Trans-Am race car for the highest bidder.

The auction also will include an autographed picture of Tony Adamowicz from 1971. A rare, autographed photo of the late Paul Newman in his Corvette at Lime Rock in 2006 also will cross the block.

Survive the Drive will have a display on the landing between the paddock and the infield viewing area at Lime Rock.

The program trains students in Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts in driver awareness and safety and is deeper than standard courses offered. Its workshops have been attended by more than 50,000 students since 1997.

The Vintage Festival at Lime Rock is Sept. 4-7. It had more than 271 entries as of late August, its largest number in years.
