Volvo V40 vs Mercedes A Class – Take the Challenge

Volvo are challenging buyers to compare the new V40 Pictured) against the Mercedes A Class

Car makers often run a little scared of overt comparisons between their cars and those of rival car makers. But not Volvo.

Volvo are throwing down the gauntlet to the new Mercedes A Class by offering buyers considering the new A Class their first month’s payment on the baby Merc if, after test driving a new V40, they still opt for the German. Under the marketing banner of ”Bored of German Techno? Try some Swedish Metal”, Volvo is pitching the Volvo V40 D2 R-Design up against the Mercedes A-Class A180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Sport and are so confident their car is better they’re prepared to put their money where their mouth is.

So far, we’ve only had a brief blat in the new A Class (we don’t seem to have had long-term loans from Mercedes since our ‘Mercedes Injector Problems‘ story started getting lots of traffic), but it does seem a very good car. But then, so does the V40.

In fact, when we had the V40 in for review at the end of last year, we advised anyone looking at the new A Class to test the V40 too as we thought they may be very surprised at how good the V40 is, and how it makes a lot of sense.

John Walker, Volvo’s Sales Director, said:

The all-new V40 has been a roaring success since its introduction and we have such belief in the V40 being a fantastic product that we’re being bold enough to put our money where our mouth is. I have no hesitation in telling people what a great car the V40 is, and by getting more and more people to test drive it, I’m sure more and more people will agree with me.

It’s a bold move by Volvo and, although some may take advantage of the offer, many will find that the V40 is a really good car with as much – if not more – to offer than the new A Class.

There are a few T&Cs to the V40 vs A Class offer, but nothing too onerous. And frankly, if you’re looking for a car in this sector you really should make sure you try the V40 – whether Volvo are willing to pay you if you choose elsewhere or not.
