AMERICAN car giant General Motors has made a surprise announcement that from 2016 its Chevrolet brand will be no more in Europe. The company has stated that it wishes to concentrate on long established brands Opel and Vauxhall instead. All is not lost, as GM will keep what it says is its ‘iconic’ models such as the Corvette, while the firm intends to focus attention on its traditional American luxury brand Cadillac ahead of a greater European push in the next few years.

From May this year Volvo will update its V40 model, equipping the premium Swedish hatchback with its range of high-efficiency Drive-E engines and Volvo’s latest eight-speed automatic gearbox. This means the revised V40 line-up now offers an impressive performance to efficiency ratio, with 190hp on offer in the D4 turbodiesel variant, returning a claimed 74.3mpg combined with 99g/km CO2 when mated to the six-speed manual. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne rejected the overture from the South Korean company, Reuters says, but it's possible Hyundai could make another offer.
