(3) TRUE VINTAGE ORIGINAL RARE FIRESTONE "LXX" CONCEPT CAR / CUSTOM / MOTORAMA / STUTZ WHEELS & TIRES (The single Center Cap is not included in this Auction)!

AUTHENTIC PROTOTYPE "RUN-FLAT" WHEELS THAT WERE WAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME!

HERE'S SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THEM THAT I FOUND ON THE INTERNET:

Firestone LXX

Firestone LXX

When Stutz presented the new Blackhawk model, the car rolled on the new Firestone LXX-tires.

1971 Stutz Blackhawk

Firestone created a revolution, the LXX was designed to be the tire/rim-combination of the 70's.
(LXX = 70, written in Roman numerals)

LXX-wheel

The new tire system was created to show several advantages:
- more safety, because the tire should rest on the rim, even, when it was damaged
- more safety, because the wheels had a bigger rim (in comparison with standard wheels), so the car-producers were able to use bigger brake drums or discs
- no need for a spare wheel, because the car can be driven even with a flat tire

1971 Stutz Duplex

As far as I know, no other cars had these safety wheels as standard.
One wheel, tire and rim together, costed about 100$, in 1970.

LXX on Elvis' car
This tire is still "on duty", it's on Elvis Presley's 1971 Blackhawk.

I think both companies were pleased.

Elvis' 1971 Blackhawk

Firestone got the prestige to show the new wheels on the most exclusive car,
and Stutz had something to show, that the new Blackhawk will be built in the tradition of the
"Safety Sportscar",
which was the slogan of the old Stutz company, back in the 20's and 30's.

LXX: detail shot

Even some of the press-pictures of 1972 show these wheels, but Firestone had to take the wheels from the market. There was a problem, the tires weren't as safe as they should have been.
The tires came of the rims, so this revolution failed...

Dream cars, Show cars and Prototypes:

El Gato (Spanish for “The Cat”)

Mercury Cougar El Gato concept

While doing a little digging for our recent post on the concept car photos from the Ron Kellogg collection, we kept coming across a Cougar show car built in 1970 called El Gato.

The thing is, nobody seems to know much about it. That its roof was chopped, its front fenders were extended, and it was painted metallic lime green is obvious. Some observers added that the fastback roof appears to come from a 1969/1970 Mustang and that the 16-inch wheels are wrapped with custom Firestone LXX tires.

In addition to the standard press photos floating around the Internet, Flickr member Boss Mustang has a couple shots of it from the 1970 Detroit Auto Show.

So the big question is: Did Ford really destroy it after the 1970 show season, as some people suspect? Or is it still out there? Either way, is anybody up to the task of cloning it?

The 1969 Farago Pontiac CF 428

This truly unique car is the one off 1969 Farago Pontiac CF 428 concept, owned by Frank Campanale of Orchard Lake, Michigan.  The car was designed by Frank Campanale's uncle Paul Farago in 1969 as a styling exercise and prototype for the establishment of Farago's Coggiola coach building company. Hence the "CF" for Coggiola Farago. Paul Farago was a Chrysler Engineer and had supervised the construction of the Chrysler Ghia cars in the 1950's and 60's. He also helped design the Maserati Ghibli, which is similar in appearance to the long hood short deck design of the Farago Pontiac CF 428.

The Farago Pontiac CF 428 was built using a 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix. The car retains much of its Pontiac Grand Prix parts including exterior tail lights, doors handles, back glass, and interior. Best of all, the car retains its Pontiac powered 428 V8 motor and drive train. The car's current rolling stock consists of Firestone LXX wheels and tires (which were sold as a set at Firestone dealers in the late 60's/early 70's). The car remains in excellent condition today and has been shown at various Concours shows including the famous Meadowbrook Concours dElegance.

Note the Pontiac Arrowhead emblem on the nose

The only obvious changes made to the 69 Grand Prix interior

are a wood wheel and CF 428 badge on the console
