Clutch Bearing (16906.02) by Omix-Ada®. The release bearing engages the clutch cover diaphragm spring fingers when the clutch pedal is depressed, disengaging the clutch. When the pedal is released, the clutch linkage moves the release bearing back away from the diaphragm fingers, allowing the clutch cover springs to clamp the clutch disc between the cover and flywheel, engaging the clutch. A grinding noise that occurs only when the pedal is depressed is most likely caused by a worn release bearing. If your release bearing is in need of replacement, Omix-Ada has the new unit that will have you shifting smoothly and quietly again.

Depress the clutch pedal and shift into 1st gear while listening for noise. If there is noise, it could be a worn release bearing or worn pilot bearing. If the noise remains when the transmission is shifted into neutral, the release bearing is bad.

A common cause for release bearing noise and failure is clutch linkage that is out of adjustment, causing the release bearing to remain in constant contact with the diaphragm spring fingers. This will also cause the clutch to slip.

Inspect the release bearing for wear where it contacts the diaphragm spring fingers. Check the bore for wear; the bearing should slide freely over the front transmission bearing retainer. Turn the bearing by hand while feeling for roughness.
