In fact, that thin film of oil (typically just 0.0025"-0.003") mentioned above can disappear for other reasons other than foreign particles. Bearings can wear with use, they can be starved of oil if there is a pump or clogged oil passage problem, and they can also become fatigued due to detonation or engine lugging. The crankshaft thrust bearing can fail due to excessive torque converter pressure or from riding the clutch pedal, resulting in excessive crankshaft end-play.

Most plain bearings are constructed with a steel backing that provides support, with overlays of copper and/or lead alloy, and final surface coating of Babbitt material, to provide a soft surface if shaft contact is made and to collect contaminants that would otherwise damage the crankshaft. Symptoms of main bearing failure include knocking, particularly at engine startup, and low oil pressure. Most oil pressure lights don't illuminate until pressure is very low, so even if you don't see a light but hear a lot of clattering and knocking, chances are you have low oil pressure.
