It is mounted to the front of the transmission and incorporates the release bearing. When the clutch pedal is depressed, fluid pressure generated by the clutch master cylinder actuates the clutch slave cylinder, applying the release bearing and disengaging the clutch. The clutch slave cylinder can leak and wear internally, preventing disengagement of the clutch. The clutch hydraulic system is similar to a brake hydraulic system, except instead of actuating brake pads or shoes, the hydraulic clutch system actuates the clutch release bearing. However, like the brake hydraulic system, the clutch hydraulic system can malfunction due to similar defects, like fluid leaks, internal wear of the bore and piston seals, and air in the system. External fluid leaks and internal seal wear can cause a soft pedal or excessive pedal travel. An excessively hard pedal can be caused by binding in the system, which could be caused by contamination of the fluid swelling the seals, or a restricted fluid line. Any of these symptoms can prevent clutch disengagement, rendering your vehicle undriveable.

The release bearing portion of the concentric clutch slave cylinder can sometimes be detached and replaced separately. Inspect this part of the unit for wear to the clutch cover diaphragm finger contact area and turn the bearing to check for roughness.
