Mini factory celebrates its 100th birthday
Thu, 28 Mar 2013A bastion of the British car-building industry, Mini’s ‘Plant Oxford’ in Cowley, Oxford celebrates 100 years of building cars today (28 March 2013). Currently responsible for producing the second-gen BMW Mini range, Plant Oxford has been the birthplace more than just trendy city cars: it’s stamped out over 11.5 million cars since 1913, including legend like the Morris Minor and Frogeye Sprite, and clunkers like the Morris Marina. It also contributed to the war effort by repairing damaged RAF fighter aircraft during the Second World War.
Final Bugatti Veyron 16.4 spoken for
Fri, 24 Jun 2011If you've always wanted a new Bugatti, you'll have to settle for the Grand Sport: All 300 cars in the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 model run have found homes, the last one having been ordered by a European customer who will take delivery next autumn. The Veyron came to life in concept form at the Tokyo motor show a year after the Volkswagen Group bought the rights to the Bugatti name in 1998. The Veyron was the first production car to have a full carbon-fiber monocoque, and its 8.0-liter W16 engine produced 1,001 hp and 922 lb-ft of torque, mated to a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox.
Toyota Prius plug-in hits UK
Mon, 21 Jun 2010The Toyota Prius plug-in arrives in the UK The next step in the Toyota Prius story is the plug-in Prius, which adds some Lithium-Ion batteries to the mix and the ability to plug the Prius in to the mains to get a usable kick-start to your day’s motoring, with an electric only range of up to 12.5 miles – around double the range a regular Prius can manage when fully charged. Toyota announced plans to get 500 Prius Plug-in Hybrids on the roads in 2010 back in September last year to evaluate their real-world performance before the plug-in gets a proper release – probably in 2012. Toyota are leasing 20 of the Prius plug-ins to a handful of public and private businesses in London as part of their plan to develop the Prius plug-in, and reduce the company’s overall CO2 levels – something which is sadly required by legislation.
