My Garmin 396 and Zaon XRX combination is now redundant in my cockpit. I have flown hundreds of hours behind this combination in my airplane - but now it's your turn to enjoy the situational awareness. These two units are in perfect working order and are in fact still installed in my airplane. I will remove them and send them to the new owner once the auction is complete. I have the custom cable that brings the Zaon XRX traffic into the Garmin 396 and displays traffic as an overlay on the map.

The XM weather subscription is terrific as is making a cross country with music from Sirius/XM radio. Included is a separate GPS antenna for the dash as well as the "stick" antenna that goes on the back. The XM antenna is obviously included as well. The yoke mount is included as is a "bean bag" dash mount, various cables and a carry bag for the unit. The Zaon XRX, if you aren't familiar, "sees" the transponders of other airplanes and reports their position to you. Once you power on the unit, you select "up arrow" for flight and the Zaon displays "Garmin" meaning it is sending traffic to the Garmin 396 on the combination power/data cable.

This has been a trusted combination in my cockpit - but with the avionics upgrades I have made it's simply time for me to give someone the chance to have a moving map with weather and traffic in their cockpit. You will have to purchase your own subscriptions for XM weather and music if you want them. http://www.xmwxweather.com/aviation/

The GPSMAP 396 comes with a detailed built-in Jeppesen® database along with terrain and U.S. obstacles databases. Using this information, the 396 provides detailed views of your flight route, displayed over realistic topography. For added safety, you can put the unit in Terrain mode for TAWS-like warnings and alerts when proximity conflicts loom ahead.

View Images in Sharp Detail

Viewing the display in any light is easy, thanks to the unit’s 256-color, high-resolution (320 x 480-pixel) sunlight-readable TFT display with adjustable backlighting. The 396 also features USB data transfer, fast processing speed and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack.

Add Weather, Radio and Traffic

Make informed decisions based on weather and traffic with optional sensors and services. With a subscription to XM WX Satellite Weather and the included GXM 30A smart antenna, you’ll have access to constantly-updated, high-resolution weather data for the U.S., right in the cockpit. Weather information includes Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD), Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs), Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs), Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), Lightning and Winds Aloft and can be laid directly over the 396’s map. With an additional monthly service fee, GXM 30A delivers XM Satellite Radio to your aircraft.

Thu, 10 Feb 2011

Renault today announced a new six-year strategy dubbed Renault 2016 – Drive the Change. A typically naff marketing-led title, but there’s some interesting detail on CEO Carlos Ghosn’s vision for Renault between now and 2016. Like how he wants to build 1.5 million electric cars in the next five years.

Ford Focus Electric debut

Sat, 08 Jan 2011

2012 Ford Focus Electric - debuted at CES Las Vegas We expected Ford to debut the electric version of the new Focus at the Detroit Motor Show next week until they did the whole ‘Electric Focus Tease‘ thing last week. Just like Audi with their latest e-Tron Spyder, Ford has chosen to take the wraps off at the CES in Las Vegas. Which is probably as clear an indication as you need that the car’s place in the marketplace is becoming blurred with the push towards electric cars.
