Mitsubishi's 600bhp EV to tackle Pikes Peak

By Damion Smy Motoring Issues 03 June 2014 17:11 Mitsubishi will enter the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb – the 92nd running of the prestigious event – with its specially built electric racecar, it announced today. The team finished second and third in the electric class at the 2013 event, and will use the same drivers – former motorcycle class winner, Greg Tracy, and Dakar-rally winner Hiroshi Masuoka – for the 12.42-mile climb to the 14,110ft summit. The bewinged Mitsubishi i-MiEV Evolution III is 4.7m long and 1.9m wide, with an electric motor at each corner to send a total of 600bhp through all four wheels.

The video we had earlier of the RS5 (which has now been removed by YouTube) showed the RS5 lapping the Nurburgring at a fair lick. True, it’s eschewed its monster V10 for a 4.0 litre V8 turbo in its latest iteration, but in the process it’s become a more complete car which offers great dynamics as well as a mountain of power and torque, judiciously employed through Audi’s quattro 4WD. But as Stephan Reil, Audi Quattro Division boss, said back in January, Audi are planning an even more powerful ‘Plus’ version of the RS6 Avant with around 600bhp to take on cars like the Mercedes E63 AMG S which also offers 4WD (at least in LHD markets) and 577bhp.
