Tomorrow’s world: future petrol engine tech news

You’ll have heard of the phrase 'downsizing' and most major manufacturers are shrinking their regular gasoline engines to trim emissions and fuel consumption – while employing new tech to keep up the horsepower and torque outputs. This is the holy grail for engineers: maintain the power and performance of the existing big capacity engines we’ve become wedded to, but in a smaller, more economical package.

The Vauxhall Monza coupe concept is a sign of things to come, says Vauxhall, and will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013. Vauxhall coupes are rare beasts: since the Cavalier-based Calibra of the '90s and smaller Corsa-based Tigra, we've only had the imported V8 Monaro and the Astra two-door. The low-slung Monza previews the styling and design language of future products in the Opel/Vauxhall portfolio.

Design Development: KTM X-Bow

KTM is an Austrian motorcycle company. Originally it produced only off-road bikes, but now it also makes ATVs / quads and road orientated machines, all focused on the enthusiast end of the motorbike market - there are no retro-cruisers, scooters or large screened tourers in the KTM range. In the summer of 2005, this hardcore motorbike company, along with their design partner of 14 years, Kiska, embarked on a research project, which within 6 months saw them committed to adding a sports car to their range.
