The news comes as little surprise after months of uncertainty and change at the top of VW. Bernhard built a reputation as an abrasive operator in his short stint as CEO of the Wolfsburg company and had numerous confrontations with unions as he pushed through more modern working practices.

First shown at the New York motor show earlier in 2013, the low-slung four-door breathed life back into the idea of future hot Imprezas, but UK enthusiasts were set to miss out. Police advocate 'role reversal' for cyclists and truckers

BRITAIN’S most senior police officer has advocated a scheme to improve cyclists' and lorry drivers' understanding of each other's needs on the road following a spate of deaths. Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said drivers and cyclists need to think about how they use the road. Speaking on LBC 97.3, he said: "It's a tragedy that we've had so many deaths in the last few days.
