Racing torque converters are generally grouped by size (diameter) and stall speed. As the diameter of a torque converter decreases, the stall speed (RPM) goes up. Most factory torque converters are 12-13 inch in diameter and have a stall speed around 1600-1800 RPM. This promotes excellent fuel economy and drive-ability because they are specifically designed for these purposes. The problems arise when modifications are done to the fuel system, camshaft and other engine control systems. Smaller diameter converters are needed to provide more slip at idle. This allows engines with a lot of camshaft to idle better. As the torque converter and horsepower range is moved higher through the RPM range, the smaller torque converters with their higher stall speeds provide maximum torque multiplication where needed. Also the same torque converter will react differently when used behind different engines.

Our 10 inch Pro Launch is designed to be used in conjunction with high compression, nitrous oxide, bigger duration cams, and stout gear ratios or supercharged and turbo applications. Stall speeds of 1000 to 2000 rpm over stock converters can be expected. Additional cooling is a must. These converters are just the ticket for street applications provided with proper cooling and gear ratios. Just bolt in and hang on!

The new Fiat Panda starts at under £9k The 2012 Fiat Panda will cost from £8,900 for the POP 1.2 8v 69 CV, rising to £12,250 for the Panda Lounge 1.3 MultiJet 75 CV in the UK. The 2012 Fiat Panda was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last Autumn, and looks as though it’s going to continue the Panda tradition of simple motoring at affordable prices with the news that the starting point for the new Panda will be £8,900 for the entry-level Panda POP 1.2 8v 69 CV. Even the top-of-the-range Panda Lounge 1.3 MultiJet 75 CV comes in at a not too unreasonable £12,250, with another eight models in between the two extremes offering variations of trim and engines to suit sensible urbam motoring.

Will the Hyundai Veloster (pictured) get Hyundai's new engines? When we reported prices and specs last week for the new Hyundai Veloster, we were suitably impressed at what was on offer, with one exception – the engine. We’d been hoping for a little more oomph from the successor to the very good Hyundai Coupe, and we were a little disappointed that the only engine on offer was a 138bhp diesel.
