Isuzuperformance Racing Team Polyurethane Engine Mount Bushing Set.   Also Called Motor Mounts And Includes Transmission Mounts.

Designed specifically for the following vehicles with 4XE1 1.6 Liter DOHC Turbo and Non-Turbo Engine:

  • Lotus Elan M100 Late, SIR, With Airbag

Please note that there are two different types of engine mount assemblies used on these vehicles.  

  1. Vehicles which do not have Supplemental Inflatable Restraint system (Non-SIR)(no air bag) are the Early Style. 
  2. Vehicles which do have Supplemental Inflatable Restraint system (SIR)(air bag) are the Late Style.  All US Spec vehicles are the Late Style. 

The specific differences in the engine compartment are as follows:

    • The Non-SIR Elan M100 rear engine mount bracket (Steady Arm) is a long, one piece arm, which is bolted to the engine and transmission, and into which the bushing is pressed.  The chassis bracket, attached to the vehicle frame, is a "U" shaped clevis bracket which attaches to the sides of the bushing. 
    • The SIR Elan M100 use a multi piece Steady Arm bracket which is bolted to the engine, and which has side "cheek/check" plates that bolt to the sides of the bushing itself.  The bushing is pressed into an aluminum trunnion style bracket which is bolted to the chassis.  The later design incorporates a crash safety pivot into the rear engine mount cheek plates with tight clearances and additional tight clearances around the aluminum trunnion bracket, which affect the shape of the bushing.  In addition to this, the Late Style vehicle is equipped with wider Left Front and Right Front engine mount brackets, and Collapsible Spacers.  These mechanisms allow the engine to move forward in a frontal crash.  These mechanisms are also incompatible with polyurethane bushings and aggressive driving which includes hard acceleration and engine braking or hard down shifting.

You must determine which engine mount type your vehicle uses and order the correct bushing set to match your vehicle, because the bushing sets for the two vehicles are not interchangeable.

What Do Air Bags Have To Do With Engine Mount Bushings?  Non-SIR vs. SIR.

The earliest Elan M100 cars produced did not have air bags or any frontal crash safety certification.  The engines were solidly bolted to the chassis of the vehicle.

When Lotus sought crash safety certification, in addition to air bags, they found that they had to make changes to the vehicle to reduce the severity of frontal crashes.  Their solution was to redesign the engine mounting to allow for the engine to break loose from the chassis in a frontal collision.  The engine effectively comes loose and becomes cargo to rattle around, instead of being part of the mass of the vehicle as it collides with a solid object.  This allows for a longer duration for the crash event, reduces the mass of the crash structure, and reduces the stress upon the vehicle passengers.

The mechanisms added by Lotus are a hinged Rear Trunnion mount side "Cheek/Check Plates", and collapsible spacers on the Right Hand and Gearbox (Left) mounts.  In the event of a frontal crash, the collapsible spacers flatten and the hinged cheek plate swings.

Unfortunately, these mechanisms require bushings that are cast to sleeves, and are flexible enough to pull several inches sideways.  Polyurethane bushings are rigid and cast in two halves that slide into their brackets from the sides.  They require a firm clamping force to hold them in place.  The collapsible spacers do not provide adequate clamping of the bushing, and will not keep the assembly from sliding sideways when using a bushing that must be clamped in with a side force.  In addition to this, the design of these mechanisms is intended to allow for movement of the engine and transmission assembly within the chassis, which is completely counterproductive to the intention of rigid engine mounts.  Under heavy acceleration, deceleration, upshift, and down shift / engine braking conditions, these mechanisms will allow unwanted movement of the drivetrain, and decrease the vehicle performance and driver control of the vehicle.  For these reasons, we have designed separate bushing sets for the Early (Non-SIR, Without Airbag) and Late (SIR, With Airbag) model vehicles.  And for these reasons, these two different items are not interchangeable. 

What would be needed to switch and use the other set of engine mounts on my car?  Switching from SIR to Non-SIR mounts or Non-SIR to SIR mounts.

This would require changing nearly all of the engine mounts brackets and hardware.  The only bracket shared between the two variations is the transmission side of the left or transmission mount.  This is a list of only the main pieces, excluding the hardware.  (Please verify this list with Lotus for accuracy, we are not responsible for part number errors).

This list is not provided as a shopping list to convert an Elan to use the opposite set of engine mount bushings, but as an illustration of just exactly what would be involved in doing such a thing.  Most of these parts have probably been discontinued by Lotus.  On the odd chance that they are available, these are rather serious and involved pieces, which are not inexpensive.  It would be surprising if Lotus sold them for less than a thousand dollars, excluding all of the nuts, bolts, and washers, which are also all different between the two.

This list has been provided as an illustration and a caution to those who might contemplate changing their Elan over from one set of brackets to the other.  There is a noticeable difference between the Non-SIR and SIR bushing sets, due to the expense of the Non-Hinged Trunnion Side Plates and Non-Collapsible Spacer Delete Pieces.  However, the cost of obtaining Non-SIR brackets to convert a car over to use the less expensive bushing set is at least three times more than the difference between the price of the two bushing sets.  We highly recommend using the bushing set designed to work with the vehicle the bushings are intended to be installed on.

65 Durometer Street Bushings

Several of our drivers requested a softer engine mount bushing for use on their street driven vehicles.  These bushings are 65 Durometer, instead of the 85 Durometer bushings we use on our race vehicles.  The 65 Durometer material is a specially formulated resin that absorbs more vibration while still resisting the twisting movement of the engine.  This provides for a greater reduction of engine vibration in the body of the vehicle, while still reducing the fore-aft movement of the engine and transmission assembly. 

When pressing against the side of the 65 Durometer bushing with the thumb, it feels like it is offering the same resistance as the 85 Durometer bushing.  But turn the thumb and press against the 65 Durometer bushing with the thumb nail, and the difference becomes much more apparent. 

Description

Set of 3 polyurethane bushings with stainless steel center sleeves. Replaces all 3 engine and transmission mount bushings of the vehicle.  AND, two solid, non collapsible spacers, and non-hinged Rear Trunnion mount side "Cheek/Check Plates".  This set is for the car with the SIR or airbag and eliminates the collapsible spacers and hinged cheek/check plates.   

Polyurethane engine mount bushings drastically reduce the movement of the engine and transmission drivetrain assembly for better traction, putting more power to the ground, and better control of the vehicle.  Polyurethane is stronger and more durable than the original rubber.  Polyurethane is more resistant to oil, chemical, and heat than the original rubber.

Eliminates engine and transmission movement, wheel hop, and part throttle bucking, while putting more power to the ground.

This is the same engine mount bushing design used on the Isuzuperformance Racing Team cars in SCCA Club Racing Super Touring class, all Redline Time Attack classes, SCCA Solo 2 Street Touring, Street Prepared, and Prepared classes, KRS Battle Royal, and JAF Gymkhana Class C racing.

Made specifically to comply with SCCA Solo II Street Touring and Street Prepared class rules.

The less severe vibration characteristics of the 65 Durometer Polyurethane make this an excellent choice for dual use street driven vehicles that are common to Street Prepared and Street Touring Class autocross.

      • One bushing and stainless steel center sleeve for Left Side or Transmission Mount below the air filter canister.  Replaces Lotus Bushing which is not available separate from the bracket assembly, and Lotus Side Pads / Rubber Stopper PN B100E6185F.  
      • One steel, yellow cadmium plated, solid, non-collapsible spacer for Left Side Transmission Mount Assembly.  Replaces PN C100A0812F. 
      • One bushing and stainless steel center sleeve for Rear Engine Mount.  The shoulder of this bushing has been slotted to fit the tabs of the bracket on the vehicle.  Replaces Lotus Bushing PN A100E6130F.
      • Left and Right steel, yellow cadmium plated, non-hinged Rear Trunnion mount side "Cheek/Check Plates".  Replaces PN B100A0871F and PN B100A0872F. 
    • These are not inserts.  These are complete bushings with stainless steel center sleeves.  This set includes the additional steel pieces required to eliminate the collapsible spacers and hinged cheek/check plates, which are not compatible with rigid engine mount bushings, or performance driving.

    • These are solid polyurethane bushings without the air spaces like the OEM rubber bushings.
    • These bushings have been made with shoulders which fit tightly against the mounting bracket tabs attached to the car, chassis, and cheek plates.  This further eliminates unwanted movement of the engine and transmission drivetrain assembly.  Note that the OEM Right and Left Side Bushings (Timing Belt Side and Transmission Side) have been designed so that the engine rotational movement places all its force on the sides of the bushings.  The vehicle manufacturer made this sacrifice for ease of assembly of the vehicle at the factory.  The vehicle manufacturer placed a soft, 1/4 inch thick pad on each side of the original rubber bushing.  This pad takes all the rotational force of the engine and transmission, and upon examination will show significant wear on both sides where it has rubbed against the metal brackets.  The built in shoulders of these rigid polyurethane bushings are thicker, fit tighter, provide superior dampening of the rotational movement of the engine, and are many times more durable than the soft rubber side pads.  Filling the OEM bushing with caulk or hammering a rubber disk cut form sports/playground equipment does nothing to reduce the sideways movement of these two mounts.  Only new bushings with built in shoulders, as these polyurethane bushings have, can reduce this movement.

Cautions Before Bidding

    • This item was designed to be halfway between the RACE bushings and OEM bushings in noise, vibration, and harshness.  Increased engine vibration is noticeable, but less severe than with the RACE bushings.  Even with a stock engine with a performance exhaust, the increase in engine vibration is noticeable. 
      • Every single loose item, component, body panel, etc., may become obvious and annoying to anyone expecting silent and vibration free vehicle operation and ride.
      • The steering wheel will shake 1/16 inch vertically when the car is sitting still and the engine is at idle speed.
      • The windshield mounted rear view mirror may become worthless for viewing out the back of the car.
      • We developed these bushings as a reduced vibration alternative to our RACE bushings, but they do not offer complete elimination of engine vibration.  These bushings are roughly halfway between the RACE and OEM bushings. 
    • This bushing set does not replace the Torque Damper assembly.  The original Torque Damper must be in good working order or must be replaced with a fixed torque rod to reduce engine and drivetrain movement.
    • Requires the use of OEM Engine Mount Brackets, this set includes bushings and center sleeves only.  Does not include brackets.  Donor engine mount brackets must be in good condition.  (PLEASE NOTE: The OEM Lotus Left Side or Transmission Mount bracket is the same as the 1990-1993 Isuzu Impulse, Stylus, and Geo Storm Manual Transmission bracket).  It is highly recommended that the original bushings be removed by the use of a hydraulic press, as this method does the least damage to the brackets.  We strongly recommend against using a torch on the SIR aluminum trunnion bracket, to avoid melting or warping the bracket.  Care must be taken not to damage, gouge, cut, or otherwise scar the inside surfaces of the brackets that the bushings fit into, as any imperfection will cause damage to the polyurethane bushing.
    • Be aware that new engine mounts appear to be no longer available from Lotus.  If you have a set of OEM engine mounts in usable condition and ever desire to return the vehicle to quiet, sedate, non-vibrating use with the soft engine mounts, it is recommended that you obtain a spare set of engine mount brackets from a salvage yard and keep your good OEM brackets for future use.
    • The Left (Transmission) engine mount brackets are NOT ROUND.  They were made from rolled sheet metal and welded together.  These polyurethane bushings have been made slightly oversized and the brackets must be carefully measured and corrected to round by use of a sanding drum on an electric drill or die grinder.  Careful and frequent measuring and test fitting must be done to perform this task correctly.   The bushing by itself should be a snug fit without the center sleeve, and when the center sleeve is pressed in, it should go in smoothly and be a very tight fit.
    • Grit blasting, priming, and painting of the brackets is recommended prior to reinstallation, but, if the bushings are tightly matched to the brackets, only a thin coat of paint should be applied to the inner surfaces of the bracket where the bushing fits.  Make sure any paint is cured before installation.
    • Bushings must be lubed before installation.  Bushing lube is not included.  We recommend Energy Suspension Formula 5 PN 911104 which can be ordered from most chain auto parts stores as well as Summit or Jegs.

Survey Finds Almost A Third Of Drivers 'Nod Off At Wheel'

ROAD safety charity Brake and insurance company Direct Line have uncovered a worrying number of drivers have admitted to nodding off when behind the wheel. Of the 1,000 drivers sampled, almost a third admitted to momentarily nodding off while seven percent claimed they had actually fallen asleep while driving. Also, 49 percent of the drivers surveyed said they had driven after less than five hours of sleep.
