Porsche used a wooden shift knob for some of its race cars, a laminated balsa wood knob for the 908, and a laminated birch wood knob for the 917. I make them all with power tools (lathe, thickness sander), NO CNC machines, so every knob is unique (the photos are for illustration purposes, the knobs may vary).

These knobs are made exactly like the original wood knobs, but with different wood species, balsa, birch, mahogany/maple, granadilla, harlequin (combined woods). They're unique knobs.

I make the knobs with a threaded metal insert, 10mm x 1.25.

The finish is rubbed oil, then a conservator's wax, then its polished. Much like a fine shotgun's stock.

Please indicate your wood choice on Paypal's comments.

Aspid tease Aspid (which were IFR Aspid) – Spanish sports car maker – is teasing a new sports car to be revealed in the next few weeks. Aspid is a Spanish maker of sports cars responsible for the rather retro – at least in styling – SuperSport model. We caught up with the Aspid SuperSport at Salon Prive a couple of years ago, and we were impressed by a Caterham-style car offering very high levels of fit and finish and a remarkable 0-62mph in under 3 seconds.

Audi A1 Quattro models ‘on the way’

Wed, 12 Jan 2011

Audi has confirmed it is testing four-wheel drive Quattro versions of the A1 – indicating an imminent expansion of Audi’s supermini range. Although showcased as this one-off at a Quattro publicity event in Montreal, Canada, to celebrate 30 years of the all-corner drive system, Ingolstadt acknowledged at last autumn’s 2010 Paris motor show that Quattro versions of the A1 were in the pipeline. The production A1 Quattro will use the Haldex differential to split drive to both axles; it’s a similar technology to that found in A3 and TT Quattros, as opposed to the mechanical Torsen diff found in larger Quattro models.

Hennessey Venom GT hits new, unofficial, speed record (video)

Tue, 25 Feb 2014

The Hennessey Venom GT (pictured) hist 270.49mph on a NASA runway Top speed records for production cars is starting to seem pretty irrelevant as there’s almost nowhere an owner can ever hope to hit those record speeds. And the performance of cars like the new McLaren P1 – where  performance and handling are much more the focus than outright top speed – has added the the irrelevance. But that doesn’t stop some car makers aiming for the bragging rights of the world’s fastest production car, and John Hennessey and his Hennessey Venom GT are back with another claim on the title.
