Vintage Radar Reflector with Monel Screen fig. 1520

Here is an early radar reflector I think from the 1950’s or so. The James Bliss Co., out of Boston Mass. was a well known marine supply retailer. Unfortunately the name of this particular reflector is partially gone.(see pictures of storage tube) The reflector appears to be unused and never deployed given the way its wrapped up in the tube.

On the tube it says “This lashes to pole or may be hung on rigging”. Open size  measures 44” x 44”. The tube has been opened but the reflector has never been used. It is nicely wrapped with a cord with a picture tag attached under the cord. A very interesting piece of marine history.

The rods measure 25” long.

Carbon-fiber parts and a software fix help create a lighter, faster Fiat

Mon, 19 Mar 2012

Chrysler Group's Mopar parts brand and Italian supplier Magneti Marelli have teamed up on a design exercise based on the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth that shaved weight and added horsepower. The vehicle, called the Venom, has a number of carbon fiber components -- hood and side mirrors, for example -- that makes it about 200 pounds lighter than the 2,512-pound Abarth. The Venom uses software updates and additional exhaust components to boost the Abarth's standard 160-hp 1.4-liter turbocharged engine's output by as much as 25 percent.

GM to double size of battery lab

Mon, 12 Apr 2010

General Motors says it will spend $8 million to double the size of its Global Battery Systems Lab, which the company claims is the largest and most technologically advanced automotive battery lab in the United States. GM says the expansion will speed up the development of hybrid and electric vehicles, such as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt, by improving on-site testing of battery cells and systems. When finished, the lab will be 30,000 square feet bigger than it is now, for a 63,000-square-foot total.
