BMW M3 coupe stripped down to go club racing

Wed, 04 Nov 2009

BMW's M division is back in the business of building specialty street-legal race cars with a new lightweight version of the M3 called the GTS. The lightweight coupe, set to go on sale in early 2010 at a yet-undisclosed price, was conceived as a limited-edition model primarily for club-based racing in much the same way that Porsche builds the 911 GT3 Clubsport. But in a clear effort to link its track-based activities with the production-car side of its business, BMW's M division is offering the new car with a homologation package that will allow customers to register the M3 GTS for street use.

Use screenwash – or risk Legionnaires’ Disease

Mon, 14 Jun 2010

Adding Screenwash stops Legionella bacterium To be entirely truthful, the risk isn’t huge. There are probably less than 500 cases a year of Legionnaires’ Disease in the UK, but new research points to a likely cause for an unpleasant infection for which the source of infection often goes undiscovered. The Health Protection Agency has been checking out findings that professional drivers were the group mostly at risk – five times more likely to contract Legionnaires’ disease – and have been looking at why.

Better Place Electric Car visitor centre opens

Tue, 09 Feb 2010

Better Place have opened a visitor centre in Israel to demonstrate their battery swap technology for electric cars Last October we wrote about a start-up company in Israel – Better Place – that had a new way forward for electric cars by taking the purchase of battery packs out of the equation, and was developing a system for ‘Battery Swap’ stations where electric car owners could drive in and swap their battery pack for a fully-charged one in a few minutes. That story first brought to our attention our favourite quote of last year – by Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn – who said “A hybrid is like a mermaid: if you want a fish, you get a woman; if you want a woman, you get a fish.” Which probably explained why Nissan – and its partner Renault – got involved with Better Place. Better Place aims to address the main concerns of electric car drivers by making the battery packs in electric cars ‘swappable’.
